Drop-in day report

On Wednesday 30th September, we held a drop-in day for all members of SAMBA. Alison, Kathleen and myself hosted the day and we were thrilled to have such a great turn-out.

It was especially exciting to see the babies and toddlers and meet the parents. The youngest set of twins was 8 weeks old and there were loads of ages ranging from baby to toddler to school age. The play equipment at the kindy got a work-out and it doesn't take many sets of multiples to fill a room!

Alison and I had a moment talking about how clucky it made us (I said it was a moment and it was brief) and how quickly and easily you forget just how little and cute they can be! We had both left our boys with our mums (given that the kindy is not our property and neither of us were brave enough to unleash our robust toddlers), but Kathleen brought her tribe of three along.

There was lots of story-swapping, from difficulties with conception, babies conceived naturally and via fertility treatment, how huge we all got in pregnancy, how quickly/slowly we bounced back, and lots of sharing of the "moment of realisation" - being told at scans that there was more than one heartbeat. I'll never forget my own personal moment, when told there were two heartbeats, I said "But how can a baby have two hearts?"!! To hear the different emotions and reactions was great fun.

Then the inevitable discussions of feeding, sleeping, weaning, milestones, etc. .. all subjects I never tire of talking about. Again, Alison and I struggled to recall details but as soon as we heard other mums talking it all came flooding back!

It was great to see tired but happy mums come along, and have all those babies lined up in prams -- just too cute!

We have to make a special mention and thanks to Tracy for running an impromtu story time and singalong session, which was a great source of entertainment for the children in the afternoon.

All in all we had a great time. For those of you who came along, it was great to meet you and we hope you found it worthwhile. For those who didn't, we hope to see you next time!

Drop-In Day

This is just a quick reminder that the SAMBA Drop in Day is being held this
Wednesday 30th September between 10am and 2pm at the kindy behind the office at 46 Lockwood Road, Erindale.

Hope to see you there!

SAMBA @ the City-Bay

Well done to all the SAMBA participants in the City-Bay this year! Whether you walked or ran
the 6 or 12km distances, whether you took the kids or left them at home, it was a fabulous
effort!

Luckily we had great weather for the day, sunny but not too hot. Scott and I both ran the
12ks this year, and really enjoyed it (even if we were a bit sore the next day!).

With nearly 30,000 participants it was always going to be tricky 'finding' people on
the day, and unfortunately we had some difficulties in coordinating meeting spots for the
different distances. We'd appreciate your feedback on whether you would enter in a SAMBA
team for future years. If you would like to comment, please email me directly.

President's Report September 2009

The following is an edited excerpt from the Mag

Happy Father's Day!

I hope all you Dads of multiples get spoilt. It takes other families with multiples to truly understand how hectic and hands-on it can be for the dads of multiples. One of my friends once told me they had a lovely routine where her hubby would get home from work and bath and dress the baby while she had a half hour to herself. This was every night! I couldn't believe it, how lovely for them!

Thank you to all those who sent in profiles and photos for the Mag this month. I've loved reading them all. A common theme seems to be the difficulties in having one on one time with our multiples, and I'm sure this extends to time with other siblings too.

We have quite a few events coming up, including
- the City-Bay fun run on Sun Sept 20th
- our Drop in day on Wed Sept 30th
- the Christmas picnic on Sun Dec 6th

The committee hopes you are all enjoying the printed Mag every month - do you wonder what it takes to put it all together? Unfortunately the printer/photocopier is on its last legs and is causing our office staff numerous headaches, particularly in printing the Mag each month. The printer has produced over 280,000 pages in the last 4 years - 5,800+ pages a month!

We would like to purchase a refurbished machine to keep producing the Mag... we have been asked about emailing newsletters and have mixed feelings about this, but this is something we will continue to consider further down the track, and once our member database has been updated. We do believe a new photocopier/printer is still necessary, however.

We would really appreciate any donations to our "Replace the Printer" fund, no matter how small. Remember, all donations over $2.00 are tax deductible. If you can help, please contact the Office for more information.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this and recent magazines, I really appreciate it..

Take Care,
Anne

HOM Report August 2009

Hi everyone,

Since my last report, our HOM group had an enormous turn-out for morning tea at my place - it was a tight squeeze! Fortunately it was a fine day weather-wise so some of the brave could play outside. One of the mums said she counted more than 35 people at one stage.. In all, 11 families were in attendance.

It was an excellent opportunity for the mums to chat and for the children to play.. when it was time for little people to have their day time sleeps, there was a mass exodus!

Noah, Zoe and Sophia will be celebrating their fourth birthdays in August, so it's a very exciting time in our house at the moment. They have just started pre-entry at kindergarten too, so it's all happening. I'll have an update on all of the above next month.

Until next time,
Bianca.

President's Report August 2009

The following is an edited excerpt from August's Mag.

Hi All,

Welcome .. I hope those with kindy and school-aged children enjoyed the school holidays. My two are still six months away from school but lots of their friends are starting to go and they can't wait to be "schoolers" too.

In this month's Mag we have lots of information about useful resources and feeding multiples.

There are books mentioned by members that are stories for children about being twins (are there any for higher order multiples? If you know of any, tell us!) .. In addition we have lots of information about upcoming events in September - including a Dads Night Out, the City-Bay fun run/walk and a Drop in Day (see previous posts on the blog for details of these events). It would be great to see as many members as possible at these events... they are great opportunities to meet with other families of multiples.

As a final reminder our next issue will be themed around Father's Day - do you have any photos or stories you'd like to contribute?

Take Care,
Anne.

HOM Report July 2009

The following is an edited excerpt from the July Mag

Hi Everyone,

I don't know about you, but personally I can't believe it's almost half way through 2009! Our trio will start pre-entry kindy in a few weeks, then full-time Preschool in October. They will be four in August. Where have my babies gone?

I am looking forward to discovering how Noah, Zoe and Sophia will interact with each other while at Kindy Monday to Thursday. We're hoping they'll be distracted by other children and learning experiences, and will leave their sibling squabbles for home. At child care lately there have been a few reports of inappropriate behaviour amongst the three of them, just generally annoying each other. It is clearly a very unique situation having siblings together in the same class or child care -- and an interesting one for parents and teachers!

I know one mother of triplets who sent her trio to preschool for some of the same sessions, but also some different, meaning she often had one with her for individual time. We're starting them in the same sessions and will see how that goes. I am very keen for them to be seen as individuals rather than a "gang" who must always be together, so splitting them a bit while it's possible may be a good idea!

If you have a story to tell or some tips that worked for you, please let me know!

There are two new additions to our expectant HOM group, I will officially welcome them in the next Mag! We now have four expectant triplet families. It's getting busy! What an exciting time for these families, it seems like a lifetime ago when ours were born!

Until next time,
Bianca

President's Report July 2009

The following is an edited excerpt from the July Mag

Hi All,
Welcome to another issue of the Multiple Mag. This issue we have some stories about multiples in schools. This has always fascinated me, along with how the multiples feel about being multiple. I enjoyed reading these articles and hope you do too. Thank you to those who sent in articles, we'd still love to hear about other multiples (eg boy twins, girl twins, boy/girl twins, higher order multiples) and their stories and experiences with school. Please send to the Office.

It will also be Father's Day soon, and we'd love to have some sort of function for dads of multiples. Please let the Office know if you have any ideas and can get involved in the organisation of something.

Until next time,
Anne

Birthday Parties with Multiples

Birthday’s create an unusual dilemma for multiples when one but not both/all are invited to a party.

We have had lots of birthday parties last year and this year where both of my twins Matthew and Lauren were invited to the party. I was often amazed when I rang up to rsvp for both of them that I’d often get a long pause on the other end of the phone which was followed up at the party by the parents saying “are they twins?” or “I didn’t know they were twins!”.

Recently though I had the instance where Matthew was invited to a birthday party for a boy from kindy but Lauren wasn’t. They both came home so excited that they’d been invited to a party but when I looked at the invitation it was only for Matthew. I wondered how I was going to explain this to Lauren. I tried but anyone who was tried to explain anything to a 4 ½ year old will know it can be quite a negotiation. When I explained that only Matthew was invited and perhaps it was a party for boys she replied with “But he said I could come!”

How could I argue with that! Kid’s do have a habit of inviting everyone to their party, my two even wanted their swimming teacher to come to their party last year. I wondered how I was going to approach this.
I didn’t want to rsvp and force them to invite Lauren. I am always so conscious that Matthew and Lauren are not a package deal. Most of the time, I try to focus on their individuality and always struggle to try and get some one on one time. How could I now turn around and treat them like a package. Lauren was so upset though, it was like she was facing social rejection at such a young age (a bit dramatic I know)!!

Anyway, when I did ring up to rsvp, after I had said Matthew would love to come the party the mother asked if Lauren would also be able to come.

What a relief! That being said we weren’t even given a weeks notice and that meant I now had to go shopping for not one but two presents. Yes that is the other dilemma …. the presents. I have now adopted a policy that family friends’ children get one present from the family and children from kindy and childcare get two presents, one from Matthew and one from Lauren. Hang on though what about our good friends that we’ve met through the two plus us group? On that logic we could end up taking 4 presents ….. a present for each of the other twins from each of my twins. Agghh!!!

That’s just going to other children’s parties. Then there are the questions about what to do for their party. Matthew and Lauren are turning 5 in November and will still have a combined party. I can’t quite fathom 2 whole parties yet. At this stage luckily most of their friends are the same. I’m not sure how many will be coming though when I start to think about the list it sounds a little overwhelming. Just adding up my 3 closest friends with twins (all also turning 5 in November!!) that’s 8 children, plus there’s kindy, childcare and family friends. Oh well, I still look forward to it and make sure every year they have a separate birthday cake each.

In the Mag - "Multiples in School"

Our theme for July's Mag is "Multiples in School", with lots of stories from members about their school experiences - from preschool and kindy to starting high school as a multiple.

It's fascinating to read about how parents and multiples have found their school experiences, and we'd love to hear more!

Please add your comments to this post or, if you've registered on the blog, create your own post. Not sure how to get started? Email me and I can send you some easy to follow instructions!

Multiples in School

Starting school is a huge milestone - for both parents and children! As with all things multiple, it can be especially stressful for families with two or more children taking this step at the same time. There is, of course, lots of information on the web - from anecdotal stories to academic research. To help navigate this maze, SAMBA has identified the following websites as being especially useful.

Top of the list has to be Two, Four, Six, Eight: Educating Twins, Triplets and More
This website is produced by well-known twin researchers David Hay and Pat Preedy. It "provides information, new knowledge and downloadable materials with regard to the educational needs of multiple birth children", and its breadth of material is fantastic. From Preschool to Secondary school, with lots of adjucnt topics too (eg Getting ready for school, Best practice and school policy), there is plenty of information for those looking for a research-oriented perspective. There are also many downloads available, including a "Checklist for parent/teacher discussion of twin separation" and a "Speech and Language Checklist".

How other parents of twins deal with school can be equally informative. For some anecodatal viewpoints, check out Twins in School: To Separate or Not to Separate, That is the Question, by Gail Jacobs. For a triplet mother's perspective, read the article Seperate Classes at the MOST (mothers of super-twins) website.

Finally, About.com's Parenting School-Aged Multiples has a plethora of school-related topics, including the perennial seperate/together classrooms issue, helping multiples with homework and back-to-school tips. Written by a twin mother in the U.S.

Twin to Twin Transfusion Group

Help!
I am looking at starting a support group for families who have walked the "Twin to Twin Transfusion" journey.
At this stage I am just trying to see how many families would be interested in being involved. TTTS is such a challenging time, many families will experience different journeys with different outcomes. If you are interested or have any feedback for me, I would love to hear from you.

HOM Report June 2009

The following is an edited excerpt from the June Mag

Hi everyone,

There's another set on the way! Congratulations to Sarah and Ben and their boys William and James who are awaiting the birth of their triplets later this year. There are now two sets of triplets on the way in SA after a very dry spell. I'm guessing it won't be long until there are more, on average there are usually 4-5 per year.

On the home front we've just been to a very well organised 5th birthday party ... a "Fairy Craft Party" was requested and that it was. Zoe and Sophia dressed up in their fairy dresses and Noah donned his blue fairy wings and off we went! There were star fairy wands to decorate, different shaped boxes brightly pre-painted ready for coloured jewels to be stuck on, and thin elastic lengths with individual cups of beads to thread on to make into necklaces. The children, all girls bar Noah, were busy and happy the entire time. I'm reckoning if there were more girls in the mix it could've been a little more chaotic!

Going to this party made me think "Maybe I could throw a party like this for my trio", but the more I thought about it the more I realised it looked like such hard work, and I wondered if I was ready for crafts on top of organising a party for three children, complete with three cakes! The birthday party issue is becoming a tricky one this year. The gang are talking about inviting children from child-care ... I thought I wouldn't have to worry about this until they started kindy! I don't know how I feel about hosting a party where the parents aren't my friends. And I don't know how I'd feel about being responsible for my own three plus those children whose parents drop off and come back when it's all over. I know that I won't be able (and won't want) to have a say over who my children choose as friends for much longer. That's exciting and slightly alarming at the same time!

I'd be really interested to hear more from other members about their multiples' birthday parties so please let me know! You might have a good story to tell - if so, can I tempt you to submit it to the Office for the next Mag?

Until next time,
Bianca

Random Samples

From Science Magazine:

Researchers in the United Kingdom are aiming to set up the world's largest twin registry.

"We've been developing TwinBank for about a year," says behavioral geneticist Robert Plomin of the Institute of Psychiatry in London, who is working with genetic epidemiologist Timothy Spector of King's College London.

A pilot study funded by the U.K.'s National Health Service, which has birth records for more than 600,000 twins, estimates that at least 300,000 pairs would agree to participate, Plomin says. That would outnumber all the world's other twin registries combined. Determining whether twins are monozygotic (identical) or dizygotic (fraternal) "would add tremendous value" in studying genetic and environmental contributions to health, he says.

New study of Postnatal Depression

Having Twins, Triplets, or more increases chances of postnatal depression
From The Guardian (UK)
Mothers who have multiple births are slightly more at risk of postnatal depression, a new study has found. The researchers say women having more than one baby should be offered plenty of support, and that doctors and midwives should be especially alert to signs of depression in these women.

Double the fun, again

From the Sunshine Coast Daily:

If Karen Ralph was surprised about having twins the first time, imagine how she felt when she learned that she was having a second set.

“My initial reaction was one of shock. My first thought was, ‘I have to go through all this again?’ but you just accept it straight away, she said.

Karen, of Buderim, is mother to Emily and Samantha, aged four, and Andrew and Claire, who just turned one.

The chances of a similar naturally conceived double take on double trouble are estimated at one in 8-10,000.

Do twins have a sixth sense? Call it twintuition

From the Times Online (UK):
Something about the 'telepathic' bond between twins seems to transcend even scientific reason

To anyone who is not a twin, twins are fascinating. They have a lifelong bond that other siblings may envy but cannot hope to emulate: they share their own language, plot their own games from early childhood, share bedrooms and birthday parties.

For Leanne Houghton, 15, that special closeness was to save her life.

It is not unusual to hear of one twin getting a headache when the other has a migraine, or feeling a twinge in a tooth when the other has a filling. But when Leanne, who is epileptic, had spent too long in the bath, it was her twin Gemma's “sixth sense” that drove her to burst into the bathroom to find her sister unconscious in the water.

Gemma dragged Leanne out and, using her first-aid skills, managed to revive her.

According to newspaper reports, Gemma always feels dizzy when Leanne has a fit.

“I got this feeling to check on her,” Gemma said. “She was under the water. At first I thought she was washing her hair or playing a trick, but when I lifted her head out I saw she had turned blue. I knew she'd had a fit.”

Without Gemma, Leanne would almost certainly be dead.

Although the twins are not identical, according to their mother they are inseparable and share an uncanny bond. So are they truly telepathically linked by a shared intuition?

Multiple numbers

If you are interested in numbers about multiples, the ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics) website is the place to go!

Births, Australia, 2007 (Cat. no. 3301.0, released October 2008) - as the name suggests - details information about births in Australia for 2007, including multiple births. To quote:

"The number of confinements resulting in a multiple birth has increased consistently since the 1970s. In 2007, the number was 4,400, 64% more than the number recorded in 1987 (2,700 confinements) and 1% more than the number recorded in 2006 (4,300 confinements)."

For 2007, the data are as follows:

Single Twins Triplets and higher order Total multiple births Total confinements
NSW 86,849 1,296 18 1,314 88,163

An in-depth look at the numbers of multiple births was done by the ABS in 2001, and also makes for interesting reading.

A twin by any other name..

What's in a name? It can be difficult to decide what to name one baby, let alone two or more! It's important to consider a few issues when naming any baby - multiple or otherwise - such as potential nicknames that can be derived from your child's name, words that could be made from the initials, or unusual names that could be difficult to spell or say.

For parents of twins and multiples, there are some extra things to consider. For example, should twins' names rhyme, or share the same initial? Should the names compliment each other or somehow "match" in some way, or should they be a complete contrast?

There are plenty of resources on around to assist in naming your babies, and it's always interesting to check out what other people have named their twins and multiples. There's a good list of twin names on Wikipedia, divided into various categories (twins in acting, sports etc). And the US Dept of Social Security also compiles an annual list of the most popular twin combinations.
